Spring is here, summer is coming and you can’t wait to set your feet free from wearing boots and feel exhilarated in your new pair of sandals. Sandals are the perfect wear for going to the beach, having a stroll in the park or hanging out with family and friends in the backyard. They are excellent for work as well. However, buying a pair just because they look cute or modern is a huge mistake. If they are not comfortable, they can cause foot problems which can lead to chronic problems such as corns, callouses and even problems with the lower back. So, in order to choose the perfectly comfortable sandals, here are the three steps to make (pun intended).
Firstly, always buy the right size of sandals. It is always a good idea to try on the shoes before you buy them because this is the only way you can be sure they fit and feel perfect. A simple rule of the thumb is to leave a little space at the end of the footbed. However, too big sandals can make the foot slosh around putting extra pressure on the tiny bones and joints in the feet. Additionally, if they are too tight (even if it is the correct size), don’t consider buying them as they might never loosen.
If you prefer online shopping, then you should follow some simple rules about how to buy a perfectly fitting pair of sandals. First, you need to measure your feet by standing on a level floor with the back of your heels against a straight edge or wall. Then, you should measure your foot length by placing a ruler flat on the floor along the inside of the foot. Take the measurement in millimetres from the heel to your largest toe – that is your foot length measurement. If you are halfway between sizes, always select the larger size. You can also check the size chart guide to convert the measurement in the right size.
Secondly, pay attention to the arch support. Even though sandals are lighter in weight, they shouldn’t lack in arch support which is critical to maintaining good foot health. So, comfortable sandals are those that are anatomically designed to support the arch muscles and provide relief while walking.
Finally, the model. In order for your sandals to be comfortable and at the same time look cute and modern, you should go for a little heel or wedge that could take some of the pressure off your feet. Flat sandals might put excessive strain on your heels, ankles and back. According to the American Podiatric Medical Association, it is recommended that the heel or the wedge should be no higher than 3” for women.
Luckily, when it comes to the model of the sandals, there is an abundance of designs to choose from. For example, the slide and slip-on sandals are backless and have an open toe with a band across the foot. They are suitable for casual and sporty styles. Then, there are the sling-back sandals which have a strap that wraps behind the heel and they are a great choice for dressier events. A different look is achieved by the gladiator sandals which have multiple straps. They look great combined with jeans or longer skirts. The platform sandals have thick soles that add height whereas the wedge sandals have soles that are higher beneath the heel and narrows toward the front.
